Anthropology The study of humans, culture, and human evolution.
Sociology The study of society, social relationships, and institutions.
Political science The study of power, governance, and political systems.
Holism The view that culture must be understood as a whole, not in isolated parts.
Cultural variation Differences in cultural practices across groups and societies.
Subculture A smaller cultural group within a larger culture with distinct values or practices.
Counterculture A group that rejects and opposes dominant cultural norms.
Social structure The organized pattern of social relationships and institutions.
Social solidarity The unity and cohesion among members of society (Durkheim).
Mechanical solidarity Social cohesion based on similarity and shared traditions.
Organic solidarity Social cohesion based on interdependence and specialization.
Social contract theory The idea that people give up some freedoms to form a government.
Hobbes’ view People need a strong authority to maintain order.
Locke’s view People have natural rights and government must protect them.
Rousseau’s view Government should reflect the general will of the people.
