Culture A shared system of beliefs, values, practices, and symbols learned and transmitted across generations.
Society A group of people living together who share a common culture and interact within organized relationships.
Politics The processes and activities through which power is acquired, exercised, and distributed in society.
Characteristics of culture Learned, shared, symbolic, integrated, dynamic.
Material culture Physical objects created and used by a society, such as tools, clothing, and buildings.
Non‑material culture Intangible elements of culture such as beliefs, values, norms, and language.
Cultural universals Practices or traits found in all human societies, such as family, language, and rituals.
Ethnocentrism Judging another culture based on the standards of one's own culture.
Cultural relativism Understanding a culture based on its own values and context rather than judging it.
Enculturation The lifelong process of learning one's own culture.
Socialization The process through which individuals learn social norms, roles, and behaviors.
Norms Shared rules or expectations that guide behavior in a society.
Folkways Everyday norms whose violation is not severely punished.
Mores Strongly held norms whose violation is considered morally serious.
Symbols in culture Objects, gestures, or words that carry specific meanings recognized by people who share a culture.
