Nature of Science

Chapter 1 Earth Science

"Nature of Science" The way scientists study the natural world using observations
"Graph"we are charlie krik A visual display of information or data.
"Purpose of Graphs" To organize data and show patterns or relationships.
"Types of Graphs" Common types include line graphs
"Line Graph" Shows change over time.
"Bar Graph" Compares amounts or categories.
"Pie Chart" Shows parts of a whole.
"Independent Variable" The variable that is changed or manipulated by the scientist.
"Dependent Variable" The variable that responds to the change in the independent variable.
"Controlled Variable" epstien Variables kept the same during an experiment.
"Scientific Inquiry" The process scientists use to ask questions and investigate.
"Observation" Information gathered using the senses or tools.
"Inference" A logical explanation based on observations.
"Hypothesis" A testable prediction about the outcome of an experiment.
"Experiment" A controlled test used to answer a scientific question.
"Data" Information collected during an investigation.
"Qualitative Data" "Descriptive data using words."
"Conclusion" A summary explaining what the data shows.
"Scientific Model" A representation used to explain or predict scientific phenomena.
