Unit 3 (Founds.)
Earth's Global Climate Vocab. Part 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Migration Patterns | The regular movement of species from one region to another, often seasonally. |
| Causal Relationships | Connections where one event directly influences or causes the other one to happen. |
| Correlational Relationships | Two or more variables change together in a predictable pattern but does not necessarily mean that one causes the other to happen |
| Carbon Cycle | The continuous movement of carbon among the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. |
| Carbon Dioxide | A colorless, odorless gas produced by respiration (breathing), combustion, and decomposition, essential for photosynthesis. |
| Intensity | The strength, power, or force of a physical quantity, such as light or energy. |
| Orbit | The path an object takes as it revolves around another body, such as Earth around the Sun. |
| Axis | An imaginary line through Earth’s center, from pole to pole, around which it rotates. |
| Rotation | The spinning of Earth on its axis, causing day and night. |
| Ice Age | A period of time in Earth’s history when thick ice sheets covered great areas of land due to a significant reduction of global temperatures. |
| Tectonic Activity | The movement of Earth’s tectonic plates that causes earthquakes, volcanic activity, and mountain formation. |
| Circulation | The large-scale movement of air or water that distributes heat and energy around Earth. |
| Glaciation | The formation and movement of glaciers over land. |
| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change, existing in various forms such as heat, light, and motion. |
| Sea-Level | The usual height (level) of the ocean’s surface, used as a reference for measuring land elevation and ocean depth. |
| Climate Model | A mathematical representation of Earth’s climate system used to predict future climate changes. |
| Temperature | A measure of how hot or cold something is. |
| Precipitation | Any form of water, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, that falls from the atmosphere to Earth’s surface. |
| pH | A measure of how acidic or basic (alkaline) a liquid is, on a scale from 0 to 14. |
| Reversible | A process to change or undo something back to its original state or condition. |
