Medieval Japan Content Vocab

Archipelago A group of islands (Japan made up of 4 main islands)
Murasaki Shikibu Japanese novelist, poet, and a maid of honor of the imperial court during the Heian period. She is best known as the author of The Tale of Genji, written in Japanese between about 1000 and 1008, one of the earliest novels in human history.
Daimyo A Japanese feudal lord who commanded a private army of samurai.
Samurai Class of warriors in feudal Japan who pledged loyalty to a noble in return for land.
Vassal a person under the protection of a feudal lord to whom he or she owes allegiance; a subordinate or dependent; a servant;
Shogun . In feudal Japan, a noble similar to a duke. They were the military commanders and the actual rulers of Japan for many centuries while the Emperor was a powerless spiritual figure.
Bushido The Feudal Japanese code of honor among the warrior class that combined ideas of Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
Zen Buddhist Garden A place to promote a calm state of mind for meditation.
Nationalism Loyalty and devotion to a particular nationality. Japanese people shared a common ethnic background and developed a strong sense of nationalism.
Tokugawa Ieyasu 1534-1616, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which lasted from 1603 to 1867 and reunified Japan
China The nation which Japan was most influenced by in regards to government, culture, and art.
haiku A Japanese form of poetry, consisting of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables
Noh Classic drama of Japan, developed chiefly in the 14th century, employing verse, prose, choral song, and dance in highly conventionalized formal and thematic patterns derived from religious sources(Shinto) and folk myths.
Kabuki A popular type of Japanese drama combined with music and dance, it is the type of theater in Japan(Played buy all male actors)
Ring of Fire an area of intense earthquakes and volcanic activity that arcs around the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
Shinto Japan's most ancient religion, which means "way of the gods"
ritual a formal series of acts always performed in the same way
clan group of families with a common ancestor
aristocracy an upper class that is richer and more powerful than the rest of society
Prince Shotoku the 21-year-old nephew of Empress Suiko who was named her regent in 593 and held most of the real power in Japan at that time
regent a person who rules when a monarch or emperor is unable to do so.
embassy a group of people who represent their nation in a foreign country
feudalism a political and social system in which a vassal receives protection from a lord in exchange for obedience and service.
calligraphy a form of elegant writing
Zen Buddhism a popular religion in Japan during the 1100's in which followers focused on clearing their minds and simplifying their lives using meditation
