| Murasaki Shikibu | Japanese novelist, poet, and a maid of honor of the imperial court during the Heian period. She is best known as the author of The Tale of Genji, written in Japanese between about 1000 and 1008, one of the earliest novels in human history. |
| Daimyo | A Japanese feudal lord who commanded a private army of samurai. |
| Samurai | Class of warriors in feudal Japan who pledged loyalty to a noble in return for land. |
| Vassal | a person under the protection of a feudal lord to whom he or she owes allegiance; a subordinate or dependent; a servant; |
| Shogun . | In feudal Japan, a noble similar to a duke. They were the military commanders and the actual rulers of Japan for many centuries while the Emperor was a powerless spiritual figure. |
| Bushido | The Feudal Japanese code of honor among the warrior class that combined ideas of Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism. |
| Zen Buddhist Garden | A place to promote a calm state of mind for meditation. |
| Nationalism | Loyalty and devotion to a particular nationality. Japanese people shared a common ethnic background and developed a strong sense of nationalism. |
