Fire Terminology

| Box Alarm | Pre-determined request for extra units based on type and location |
| Confined Space | Area with limited entry/exit. Not meant for continuous occupancy |
| Defensive Attack | Exterior firefighting to protect exposures |
| Evacuation | Removal of personnel from a dangerous area/ removal of firefighters when a structure is in danger of collapsing |
| Extrication | Removing a trapped victim ex. from a vehicle |
| Exposure | Property near a fire that could catch due to proximity |
| Fire Hazard | Materials, structures, or processes that may result in creating a fire |
| Fire Struck | Command term meaning fire is extinguished |
| Flashover | Sudden ignition of all combustibles in a space |
| Fully Involved | Term of size up meaning fire, heat and smoke in a structure are so widespread that access must wait until water can be applied |
| MAYDAY | Emergency call when a firefighter needs immediate help |
| Mutual Aid | AID agreement where nearby companies help each other |
| Offensive Attack | Interior firefighting aimed directly at fire seat |
| Overhaul | Search for hidden fire after main flames are out |
| Re-kindle | Fire thought extinguished starts burning again |
| Scene Size-up | First evaluation of hazards, lives, and resources needed |
| Under Control | Fire is contained and no longer spreading |
| Ventilation | Removal of smoke and gases from a structure |
