TermDefinition
sagittal SAJ-ih-tal Divides the body along a hypothetical plane from right to left. (Sagitta is Latin for arrow; think dividing body in half as if shot with an arrow.)
coronal KOR-oh-nal divides the body along a hypothetical plane from front to back. (Corona is Latin for crown.)
transverse tranz-VERS divides the body from top to bottom
proximal PRAWK-sih-mal closer in to the center
distal DIS-tal farther away from the center
prophylaxis proh-fih-LAK-sis preventive treatment
palliative PAL-ee-AH-tiv treating the symptoms, but not actually geting rid of the cause
occult ah-KULT hidden
sequela seh-KWEL-eh a problem resulting from a disease or injury
pathogen PATH-oh-jen the organism that causes the problem
