Chapter One, Learning Exceptionalities

| IDEA | Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. A law or act which ensures that all children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education. |
| Legislation | The act of creating laws, often used in order to improve the education field for children with disabilities. |
| Prevalence | The number or percentage of individuals with an exceptionality. |
| Disability | The inability to do something. |
| Study of exceptional learners | The study of both differences and similarities of children with disabilities. |
| Behavior Disorders | A child acting out or not normal, often disruptive. |
| Litigation | The process of taking legal action. |
| Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) | Gives civil rights protection to those with disabilities. |
| Hydrocephalus | An accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected. |
| Deinstitutionalization | Discharge from an institution. |
