Chapter One, Learning Exceptionalities

TermDefinition
IDEA Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. A law or act which ensures that all children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate education.
Legislation The act of creating laws, often used in order to improve the education field for children with disabilities.
Prevalence The number or percentage of individuals with an exceptionality.
Disability The inability to do something.
Study of exceptional learners The study of both differences and similarities of children with disabilities.
Behavior Disorders A child acting out or not normal, often disruptive.
Litigation The process of taking legal action.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Gives civil rights protection to those with disabilities.
Hydrocephalus An accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected.
Deinstitutionalization Discharge from an institution.
