Matter

| chemical change | any change that causes a new substance to be formed |
| condense | when gas releases energy, its temperature goes down until it changes to a liquid |
| conservation of mass | matter can be neither created or destroyed. the mass of an object never changes, no matter how the parts are rearranged. |
| dissolve | to mix, or cause to mix, with a liquid so that the result is a liquid that is the same throughout. |
| evaporate | when a liquid takes in energy, its temperature rises until it changes to a gas |
| freeze | when a liquid releases energy, it temperature goes down until it changes to a solid |
| gas | the state of matter where the particles are very far apart, move in all directions, and fills all the available space it is in |
| liquid | the state of matter where the particles move easily past each other and take the shape of the container it is in |
| mass | the measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| matter | anything that takes up space and has mass |
| melt | when a solid takes in energy, its temperature rises until it changes to a liquid |
| mixture | a combination of two or more substances that keep their identities |
| physical change | a change in the shape of appearance of an object |
| reaction | a process in which one or more substances are converted (changed) to one or more different substances |
| solid | the state of matter where the particles have a definite shape and volume |
| solution | one or more substances dissolved in another substance |
| temperature | a measurement of how hot or cold something is on an established scale |
| volume | the amount of space that matter takes up |
