| inverse operations | pairs of operations that undo each other. Addition and Subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and Division are inverse operation |
| irrational number | A number that cannot be expressed as the ratio a/b, where a and b are integers and b=0 |
| natural numbers | The set of numbers used for counting |
| perfect cube | A numbers whose cube root is an integer. 27 is a perfect cube because its cube root is 3 |
| perfect square | A number whose square root is a whole number. 25 is a perfect square because its square root is 5 |
| principal square root | The positive square root of a number |
| radical sign | The symbol used to indicate a positive square root, |
| real numbers | The set of rational numbers together with the set of irrational numbers |
| square root | One of the two equal factors of a number. If a^2=b, then a is the square root of b. A square root of 144 is 12 since 12^2=144 |
| truncating | A process of approximating a decimal number by eliminating all decimal places past a certain point without rounding |
