| Term | Definition |

| Fault | A fracture in bedrock, along with blocks of opposite sides of the fracture. |
| Intensity | A measure of damage done by an earthquake that's determined on the basis of the earthquake's effect. |
| Magnitude | Measure of total amount of energy released at the surface of an earthquake. |
| Destructive | Causing damage/injury. |
| Stress | Amount of force being applied to a rock or surface. |
| Tsunami | Sea waves caused by undersea events. |
| Seismogram | Record made by a seismograph; the paper on which data about earthquake waves are recorded. |
| Seismograph | Instrument used to detect earthquake waves. |
| Tension | Occurs when the Earth's crust is stretched and pulled apart. |
| Compression | Earthquakes caused by compressional stress. |
| Shearing | When the propagation of the rupture along the fault surface occurs at speeds in excess of the seismic shear wave velocity. |
