| Popular Sovereignty | Government by the consent of the government. |
| Preamble | The beginning of the U.S. Constitution that explain its purposes. |
| Limited government | A system in which government powers are carefully spelled out to prevent government from becoming too powerful |
| Majority rule | A system in which the decision of more than half the people is accepted by all. |
| Delegated powers | Powers given to the federal government by the Constitution. |
| Concurrent powers | Powers shared by the federal government and the states. |
| Separation of powers | The distribution of power among the branches of government giving each branch a particular set of responsibilities. |
| Legislative branch | The lawmaking branch of government. |
| Executive branch | The branch of government that carries out or enforces the laws. |
| Judicial branch | The branch of government that interprets the law and punishes lawbreakers. |
| Checks and Balances | A system in which the powers of government are balanced among different branches so that each branch can check, or limit the power of the other branches. |
| Veto | A refusal by the President or Governor to sign a bill. |
| Judicial review | The power of the U.S. Supreme Court to determine if a law passed by Congress or presidential action is in accord with the Constitution |
| Amendment | A written change to the Constitution. |
| Repeal | To cancel. |
| Cabinet. | The leaders of the executive departments who act as advisers to the President. |
