US CONSTITUTION

Constitution vocab

TermDefinition
Popular Sovereignty Government by the consent of the government.
Preamble The beginning of the U.S. Constitution that explain its purposes.
Limited government A system in which government powers are carefully spelled out to prevent government from becoming too powerful
Majority rule A system in which the decision of more than half the people is accepted by all.
Delegated powers Powers given to the federal government by the Constitution.
Concurrent powers Powers shared by the federal government and the states.
Separation of powers The distribution of power among the branches of government giving each branch a particular set of responsibilities.
Legislative branch The lawmaking branch of government.
Executive branch The branch of government that carries out or enforces the laws.
Judicial branch The branch of government that interprets the law and punishes lawbreakers.
Checks and Balances A system in which the powers of government are balanced among different branches so that each branch can check, or limit the power of the other branches.
Veto A refusal by the President or Governor to sign a bill.
Judicial review The power of the U.S. Supreme Court to determine if a law passed by Congress or presidential action is in accord with the Constitution
Amendment A written change to the Constitution.
Repeal To cancel.
Cabinet. The leaders of the executive departments who act as advisers to the President.
