Han Dynasty

Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) This dynasty continued the centralization of the Qin Dynasty, but focused on Confucianism and education instead of Legalism.
Liu Bang Peasant who led a rebellion in the Qin Dynasty. Became the first emperor of the Han Dynasty.
Bureaucracy type of government which is structured like a pyramid, with few people at the top, and most people at the bottom. You report to the person above you.
Chinese calligraphy Chinese characters written with ink and a brush
Anesthetic something which relieves pain
Seismograph instrument which detects earthquakes
lodestone Type of magnetic iron ore that would point south. Used to make compasses.
acupuncture the practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points to cure disease or relieve pain. The Han believed it also rebalanced your yin and yang forces.
moxibustion the application of heat at the points where the needles are inserted during acupuncture
chain pump a pump with containers attached to a loop of chain to lift water and carry it where it is wanted
iron plow and wheelbarrow allowed the Chinese to till more land and raise more crops.
industry economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories.
crossbow A powerful mechanical bow developed during the Warring States Period and perfected during the Han Dynasty.
Iron weapons Used by the Han army; it made them a superior fighting force; could keep an edge longer and were tougher than bronze.
Confucianism philosophy that follows the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius. Han Dynasty followed it. It shows the way to ensure a stable government and an orderly society in the present world and stresses a moral code of conduct.
kite Was used to send messages and to frighten the enemy with noises at night.
Civil Service Exam In Imperial China starting in the Han dynasty, it was an exam based on Confucian teachings that was used to select people for various government service jobs in the nationwide administrative bureaucracy.
silk a valuable cloth originally made only in China from threads spun by caterpillars called silkworms. It was wound onto large reels, ready to be made into cloth.
Silk Road An ancient trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea extending 4,000 miles and linking China with the Roman Empire.
paper First made out of bamboo or silk, it eventually was made out of plant fiber and mass-produced, making it more affordable and easily available.
salt Mined using an iron-tipped bamboo drill, it was used to preserve meat and fish.
