When the Earth shake

| tsunami | A series of sea waves caused by undersea events, such as a earthquake beneath the ocean floor, that rise to great heights as they near a shore. |

| seismograph | An instrument used to detect Earthquakes waves. |
| tension | A geological stress that pulls rocks apart. |
| compression | Tectonic forces squeezing rocks together. |
| shearing | The horizontal sliding motion where tectonic plates or rock blocks move past each other. |
