When the Earth shake

| Fault | A fracture in bedrock,along which blocks of rock on opposite sides of the fracture move |
| Intensity | A measure of the damage done by an earthquake that is determined on the basis of the earthquake's effect on people,structure,and the natural environment |
| Magnitude | A measure of the total amount of energy released at the focus of an earthquake. |

| Stress | The amount of force being applied to a rock or surface |
| Tsunami | A series of sea waves caused by undersea events, such as an earthquake beneath the ocean floor, that rise to great heights as they near a shore |
| Seismogram | The record made by a seismograph;the paper on which data about earthquake waves is recorded |
| Seismograph | An instrument used to detect earthquake waves |
| Tension | A pulling force or the state of being stretched or strained, acting along a flexible connector like a rope or cable, or within a material, pulling its atoms apart, opposite to compression. |
| Compression | The reduction in volume (causing an increase in pressure) of the fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine before ignition |
| Shearing | A type of force or stress that causes layers within a material or fluid to slide past each other,deforming the object |
