disability an inability to do something, a diminished capacity to perform in a specific way
handicap a disadvantage imposed on an individual
prevalence the percentage of the population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality
traumatic brain injury damage to the brain caused by an external force
special education specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equiptment, and/or facilities
intellectual disabilities a disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge and skills
emotional/behavioral disorders a mental health condition causing intense, persistent emotional distress or maladjusted reactions that disrupt daily life, including difficulties with mood regulation, relationships, and functioning, commonly seen in depression and anxiety.
deinstitutionalization moving people with mental illnesses back into the community rather than being institutionalized
normalization the effort to move with means which are culturally as normative as possible
inclusion the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or intellectual disabilities and members of other minority groups.
Education for All Handicapped Children Act mandated that all public schools provide a Free Appropriate Public Education. 1975
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act amended EAHCA. 1997
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act amended IDEA. 2004
hydrocephalus an accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected
