| Term | Definition |

| disability | an inability to do something, a diminished capacity to perform in a specific way |
| handicap | a disadvantage imposed on an individual |
| prevalence | the percentage of the population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality |
| traumatic brain injury | damage to the brain caused by an external force |
| special education | specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equiptment, and/or facilities |
| intellectual disabilities | a disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge and skills |
| emotional/behavioral disorders | a mental health condition causing intense, persistent emotional distress or maladjusted reactions that disrupt daily life, including difficulties with mood regulation, relationships, and functioning, commonly seen in depression and anxiety. |
| deinstitutionalization | moving people with mental illnesses back into the community rather than being institutionalized |
| normalization | the effort to move with means which are culturally as normative as possible |
| inclusion | the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or intellectual disabilities and members of other minority groups. |

| Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act | amended IDEA. 2004 |
| hydrocephalus | an accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected |
