What were the criticisms of the church? Corrupt popes, indulgences, and simony
What were indulgences? Buying your way into heaven
What was simony? Getting a position in the church one didn't earn/deserve
Who was Martin Luther? He was an Augustinian monk in the Holy Roman Empire
What did Martin Luther do? Luther took a stand against the selling of indulgences
What was the 95 Theses and who wrote it? It was written by Martin Luther, and it was his criticisms against the Catholic Church
How did the 95 Theses spread and how fast? It was copied and distributed through the printing press and spread throughout Europe in 2 months
What did the Catholic Church do in response to the 95 Theses? I acknowledged 54 of Luther's theses and began to work toward reform
What did Luther refuse to do and what was the response to it? He refused to recant 41/95 of his statements and was excommunicated and exiled
What did Luther do in exile? He wrote down more of his beliefs and translated the bible from Latin into German. He was also passed around Europe where his ideas led to a full scale upheaval
Why was Luther's translation of the bible important? Because only church officials could speak Latin (the language of the bible), so by translating it to German more people could read it
What is the definition of reformation? Movements for religious reform
What did Protestants believe in? Sola scriptura (by scripture alone) They believed that sacred traditions weren't necessary and that only scripture was needed to guide their faith. They also believed that we are saved by our own faith and that actions don't matter
What did Catholics believe? They believed that sacred traditions were necessary and that we need faith and works. Also, actions matter
Luther's impact on Europe: What did Anabaptists believe? Children don't need to be baptized
Luther's impact on Europe: What did Calvinists believe? Sola scriptura, no divine presence/eucharist, only simple worship
Luther's impact on Europe: What were the beliefs of Zwingle? Predestination
What is the definition of predestination? Belief that each person's faith after death is predetermined by God and no one can do anything to change it
Luther's impact on Europe: What were the beliefs on Anglican (Church of England)? King Henry V wanted a divorce which the pope didn't allow, so he broke off and formed his own church in 1534 via the Act of Supremacy
What did the Catholic Church reform to address? Protestantism
What did Ignatius of Loyola do? It gained many followers (founded the Jesuits), founded schools across Europe, converted places (Asia, Africa), and stopped the spread of protestantism
What were missionary movements? When church representatives accompanied leaders/explorers of the Age of Exploration to spread the gospel. Results were often mixed
What did Pope Paul lll do (1534-1549)? He investigated clerical abuse, performed inquisitions (questioned people), and called for the Council of Trent
What was the Council of Trent (1545-1563)? Catholic Church's interpretation of the bible was supreme, faith/good works needed for salvation, bible/church tradition are equally important, end of indulgence selling, and real presence of the eucharist
