TermDefinition
Disability Inability to do something, a diminished capacity to perform in a specific way.
Handicap Disadvantage imposed on an individual.
Prevalence The percentage of a population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) An acquired brain injury caused by an external physical force that results in impairment of cognitive, physical, emotional, or behavioral functioning.
Intellectual Disabilities A condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior that originate during the developmental period.
Emotional/Behavioral Disorders Conditions marked by persistent emotional or behavioral difficulties that significantly interfere with learning, relationships, or everyday functioning.
Emotional Disturbance A condition involving long-term emotional or behavioral problems that adversely affect a student’s educational performance.
Deinstitutionalization The movement to remove individuals with disabilities from large institutions and provide care and services within community-based settings.
Inclusion Educating students with disabilities alongside their non-disabled peers in general education classrooms, with appropriate supports.
Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) A 1975 law guaranteeing children with disabilities a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) A federal law ensuring students with disabilities receive special education and related services tailored to their needs, protecting their rights in school.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) The 2004 update to IDEA that reauthorized and strengthened special education laws, emphasizing accountability, research-based practices, and access to the general curriculum.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) A 1990 law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications.
Hydrocephalus A condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain, potentially causing increased pressure and affecting physical and cognitive functioning.
Special Education Specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student.
