Disability Inability to do something, a diminished capacity to perform in a specific way
Handicap Disadvantage imposed on an individual
Prevalence Percentage of a population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Orthopedic impairments, and other health impairments
Special Education Specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equipments or facilities
Intellectual disabilities and emotional or behavioral disorders Known as "Idiotic" or "Insane" (emotional disturbance)
Deinstitutionalization movement Breaking down barriers to the participation of people with disabilities in activities with non handicapped individuals
Inclusion Issue with all exceptional students including those with special gifts or talents
Education for all handicapped children act PL 94-142 amended to become the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)
Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) The basic requirements of the law have not changed, everyone has the right to free public education
Free Appropriate Public Education Every student with a disability has an appropriate public education at no cost to the parents or guardian
Identification Extensive efforts to screen and identify all children and youths with disabilities
Due Process The students and parents rights to information and informed consent before the student is evaluated, labeled, or applied, and the right to an impartial due process hearing if they disagree with the schools decisions
Parent/ Guardian Surrogate Consultation The students parents or guardian are consulted about the students evaluation and placement and the educational plan; if the parents or guardian are unknown or u available, surrogate parent must be found to act for the student
Least Restrictive Environment (IEP) A written individualized education program is prepared for each student with a disability, including levels of functioning, long term goals, extent to which the student will not participate in th general education classroom and curriculum
Non discriminatory Evaluation Student is evaluated in all areas of suspected disability and in a way the tis not biased by his or her language or cultural characteristics or disabilities
Confidentiality The results of evaluation and placement are kept confidential, though the students parents may have access
Personnel Development, in service Training for teachers and other professional personnel, including in service training for general education teachers, in meeting the needs of students with disabilities
American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities that are like those provided to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, and religion
Hydrocephalus An accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected
