Plant Structures

TermDefinition
root a plant structure that usually grows into soil to support the plant and take in water and nutrients
leaf a plant structure where food is usually made
fibrous roots that take in water close to the surface
root hairs tiny hair-like structures where water and nutrients enter the plant
taproot a root that collects water and nutrients deep in the soil
chlorophyll a green substance found in leaves and some other structures that captures the energy in sunlight
photosynthesis the process in which plants use energy from the sunlight to make food
stem a plant structure that connects the leaves to the roots
trunk a thick, woody stem that supports the branches of a tree
vascular system a system of tubes connecting the leaves, stems, and roots. It carries food, water, and nutrients to all parts of a plant.
