JMS Watershed Vocab

| Watershed | An area of land where all the water drains to one main body of water. |
| Runoff | Water that flows over the land after rain or snow. |
| Precipitation | Water that falls from the atmosphere as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
| Tributary | A small stream or river that flows into a larger body of water. |
| Surface Water | Water found on Earth’s surface, such as lakes, rivers, and streams. |
| Groundwater | Water found underground in soil and rock. |
| Aquifer | A layer of permeable rock or sediment that stores groundwater. |
| Percolation | The process of water slowly filtering down through soil. |
| Water Table | The top level of groundwater stored underground. |
| Pollution | Harmful substances that contaminate water. |
| Land Subsidence | The sinking of land caused by removing too much groundwater. |
| Gravity | The force that pulls water downhill toward lower areas. |
