protagonist main character
antagonist who actively opposes the protagonist
dynamic character a character who experiences significant inner personal change througought the story (ex. they go from mean to nice by the end of the story)
static character a character who experiences no significant inner personal change by the end of the story
first person point of view uses "I, Me, My", narrator is reflecting their own experiences
second person point of view "you, your" narrator is speaking directly to the reader
third person limited the narrator only knows what is going on inside the head of one character
third person omniscent the narrator knows what is going on inside the head of all characters (narrator understands all characters and situations in the story)
theme of the story What should the reader take away from this story? the big idea or message the author wants us to understand
themes are BIG IDEAS, such as death, love, and nature
man vs. self occurs when a character struggles with themselves
man vs. man occurs when characters are at odds with one another
man vs. nature occurs when a character struggles against weather, wilderness, or natural disaster
man vs. society occurs when a character rebels against authority (motivations often include sense of right/wrong, survival, freedom
symbols people, objects, or abstract ideas that represent a deeper meaning (rose=love, skull=danger)
metaphor compares two things symbolically (says one thing is another to show a deeper meaning)
simile a metaphor using like or as
imagery descriptive language (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
foreshadowing when the author hints at what is to come later in the story
flashbacks a scene that takes place during an earlier time
allusions a reference the author makes to something outside the story (ex. he was a real Romeo with the ladies)
irony occurs when something is the opposite of what is expected
situational irony something happens that is opposite of what was expected
dramatic irony the reader knows something the characters do not know
verbal irony a character says the opposite of what they mean
