joints, med specialties, pathology, curvatures of spine

| Fibrous Joints | consisting of inflexible layers of dense connective tissue, hold the bones tightly together |
| Cartilaginous Joints | allows only slight movement and consist of bones connected entirely by cartilage |
| Synovial Joints | is created where two bones articulate to permit a variety of motions |
| Ball and socket Joints | allow a wide range of movement in many directions |
| Hinge Joints | synovial joints that allow movement in one direction or plane |
| Synovial Capsule | outermost layer of strong fibrous tissue |
| Ligaments | bands of fibrous tissue that form joints connecting bone to bone or bone to cartilage |
| Bursa | fibrous sac that acts as a cushion to ease movement in areas |
| Chiropractor | holds a doctor of chiropractic degree and specializes in the manipulative treatment of disorders originating from misalignment of the spine |
| Orthopedic Surgeon | a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders involving the bone, joints, and muscles |
| Osteopath | holds a doctor of osteopathy degree and uses traditional forms of medical treatment in addition to specializing health problems by spinal manipulation |
| Podiatrist | specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the foot |
| Rheumatologist | specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of arthritis and disorders such as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, and tendonitis |
| ankylosis - crooked, abnormal condition | loss or absence of mobility in a jt. due to disease, injury, or a surgical procedure |
| Arthrosclerosis - joint, abnormal hardening | stiffness of the joints, especially in the elderly |
| Bursitis - bursa, inflammation | inflammation of a bursa |
| Hemarthrosis - blood, joint, abnormal condition | blood within a jt. frequently due to a jt. injury |
| kyphosis - hump, abnormal condition | abnormal increase in the outward curvature of the thoracic spine as viewed from the side |
| Lordosis - bent backwards, abnormal condition | abnormal increase in the forward curvature of the lumbar spine |
| Scoliosis - curved, abnormal condition | abnormal lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine |
| Osteoporosis - bone, small opening, abnormal condition | severe decrease in bone density due to the bone becoming more porous (holey) |
| Osteopenia - bone, deficiency | a small decrease in bone density |
