| Cartilage | Smooth and rubbery material that acts as a shock absorber |
| Joints (articulations) | The union between two bones, usually located at the end of two bones |
| Ligaments | Bands of fibrous tissue that connects 2 bones, usually at the sight of a joint (union) |
| Synovial | Forms the lining of synovial joints and secretes synovial fluid. Lubricant that makes smooth joint movements possible. |
| Bursa | A sac like structure that provides a cushion between two structures and prevents friction |

| Cartilaginous joints | allow only slight movement and consist of bones connected entirely by cartilage |
| Synovial joints | where 2 bones articulate to permit a variety of motions |
| Ball and socket joints | allow a wide range of movement in many directions (hip and shoulder) |
| Hinge joints | synovial joints that allow movement primarily in 1 direction or plane |
| Synovial capsule | outermost layer of strong fibrous tissue, sleeve around joint |

| Ankylosis | The loss or absence of mobility in a joint due to disease, injury, or a surgical procedure |
| Arthrosclerosis | stiffness of the joints, especially in the elderly |

| Kyphosis | an abnormal increase in the outward curvature of the thoracic spine as viewed from the side |

| Osteonecrosis | the death of bone tissue due to insufficient blood supply |
| Osteoclasis | the surgical fracture of a bone to correct a deformity |
