Theatre Careers

Introduction to theatre career vocabulary

TermDefinition
Actor the person responsible for bringing a character to life on stage through vocal and physical performance techniques
Stage Manager the person that manages the technical teams, keeps the backstage area safe, and communicates between the director and actors
Lighting Designer the responsible for using lighting instruments to make sure characters and stage areas are seen
Makeup Designer the person responsible for creating makeup designs for a production
Set Designer the person responsible for creating the setting of the play
Producer the person in charge of providing the financial resources for the production
Director the person responsible for reading and interpreting the play script, giving the actors direction, and creating the vision for the technical team
Sound Designer the person responsible creating sound designs that helps to communicate the mood of the show
Costume Designer the person responsible for designing the items that characters will wear on stage
Playwright the person who writes the play
Prop Master the person responsible for collecting all items that belong to the characters but are NOT worn
