| reservoir | a body of water used for storing water |
| erosion | processes by which rock, sand, and soil are broken down and carried away |
| weathering | the chemical and physical process that breaks down rock at earth surface |
| runoff | water that flows over the ground surface rather than soaking into the ground |
| precipitation | rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground |
| transpiration | evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant |
| deposition | process in which sediment is laid down in new locations |
| sublimation | a change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid |
| condensation | the change of a gas to a liquid |
| evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
| polarity | molecules having uneven distribution of charges |
| hydrogen bonds | weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another atom |
| cohesion | attraction between molecules of the same substance |
| adhesion | an attraction between molecules of different substances |
| surface tension | a measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid |
| capillary action | tendency of water to rise in a thin tube |
| high boiling point | water has a boiling point of 100*c |
| universal solvent | water-due to its polarity and ability to dissolve many different solutes |
| albedo | the light or radiation that is reflected by a surface, typically that of a planet or moon |
| infiltration | permeation of a liquid into the soil by filtration |
