Unit 6 Conflict Civil War

Jefferson Davis The first and only President of the Confederate States of America. Made up of the 11 Southern states that rebelled against the United States by seceding from the Union.
Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the United States, serving during the time of the Civil War. He was shot on April 14th and died the next morning.
Union A group of states joined together under a Central Government. In the Civil War, the Union was made up of the states that did not rebel and leave the United States (commonly referred to as the North).
Emancipation The act of being freed from someone else's control.
Conscription The government-mandated enrollment of people for military service, commonly referred to as “the draft”
Blockade An act of surrounding or blocking a port, city, or country to stop the movement of people or goods coming in or out.
Abolitionist A person who worked to end the practice of slavery through speeches, newspapers, legal and political methods, and the Underground Railroad.
South Carolina Ordinance of Secession (1860): Document where SC political leaders officially seceded (withdrew) from the US on December 20th 1860.
Election of 1860 Deeply divided election of 1860 with four candidates participating, and Abraham Lincoln winning to become the 16th President of the US . Took place on Nov 6th 1860.
The American Civil War A war from 1861-1865 between the United States of America (Union or The North) against the Confederate States of America (Confederacy or The South)
Secession The act of withdrawing from a country

Why was it necessary for the South to explore underwater technology during the Civil War? The Union had a blockade that prevented supplies from coming in or going out.
What was the significance of the Battle of Fort Sumter? It was the first official conflict of the Civil War.

What advantage did the Confederacy have when the Civil War began? Its military was fighting on home ground.
