Forms of Energy

Identify and define different types of energy

TermDefinition
Heat/Thermal Energy This type of energy comes from tiny particles (atoms and molecules) inside objects that are always moving/ vibrating.
Light Energy This type of energy we can see. This energy travels very fast and moves in straight lines.
Chemical Energy This type of energy is stored in chemical bonds between atoms/ molecules. It is released during a chemical reaction.
Nuclear Energy This type of energy is stored in the center (nucleus) of atoms. It is released when the nucleus of an atom splits apart or joins with another nucleus. It comes from the sun and nuclear power plants.
Electrical Energy This type of energy is from moving electric charges. This energy is caused by the movement of electrons.
Electromagnetic Energy This type of energy travels as waves. It includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Sound Energy This type of energy is made by vibrations and is created when objects vibrate.
Magnetic Energy This type of energy comes from the movement of electric charges. It is related to magnets and magnetic fields (the north and south pole).
Gravitational Energy This type of energy related to gravity. It pulls objects toward each other affects everything with mass.
Mechanical Energy This type of energy is the energy of motion and position. It includes kinetic energy (moving objects) and potential energy (stored energy due to position or shape).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
