Module 5 vocabulary

| counterexample | A statement or example that shows a conjecture is false. |
| cube root | One of three equal factors of a number. If A to the third = B, than A is the cube root of B. The cube root of 64 is 4 since 4 cubed =64. |
| inverse operations | Pairs of operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations. |
| irrational number | A number that can not be expressed as the ratio a/b, a and b are integers and b cannot = 0 |
| natural numbers | The set of numbers used for counting. |
| perfect cube | A number whose cube root is an integer. 27 is a perfect cube because its cube root is 3. |
| perfect square | A number whose square root is a whole number. 25 is a perfect square because its square root is 5. |
| principal square root | The positive square root of a number. |
| radical sign | The symbol used to indicate a positive square root. |
| real number | The set of rational numbers together with the set of irrational numbers. |
| square root | One of the two equal factors of a number. If a to the 2 power = b, then a is the square root of b. A square of 144 is 12 since 12 to the 2 power = 144. |
| truncating | A process of approximating a decimal number by eliminating all decimal places past a certain point without rounding. |
