AP Bio: Unit 6

QuestionAnswer
DNA The molecule that stores genetic information; made of nucleotides in a double helix.
RNA A single-stranded nucleic acid involved in protein synthesis and gene regulation.
Transcription The process of making an RNA copy from a DNA template.
Translation The process of using mRNA to assemble amino acids into a protein.
Codon A sequence of three RNA bases that codes for a specific amino acid.
mRNA (messenger RNA) Carries genetic information from DNA to the ribosome for protein synthesis.
tRNA (transfer RNA) Brings amino acids to the ribosome during translation.
rRNA (ribosomal RNA) Forms part of the ribosome and helps assemble proteins.
Operon A group of genes regulated together in prokaryotes.
Promoter A DNA region where RNA polymerase binds to start transcription.
