Matter
| Term | Definition |

| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space as a solid, liquid, or gas |
| solid | the state of matter that has a definite shape and volume; the molecules are tightly packed with little to no movement |
| gas | the state of matter that does not have definite shape or volume; the molecules are spread out |
| liquid | the state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape; the molecules are loosely spaced |
| physical change | a change in the size or form of matter; can often be reversed; can be caused by temperature, pressure, and motions; ex: ice cream melting, liquid water freezing into ice, clouds forming |
| chemical change | a change that forms a different kind of matter (changes the molecules); usually cannot be reversed; ex: burning wood, metal rusting, digesting food |
