Matter

TermDefinition
mass the amount of matter in an object
matter anything that has mass and takes up space as a solid, liquid, or gas
solid the state of matter that has a definite shape and volume; the molecules are tightly packed with little to no movement
gas the state of matter that does not have definite shape or volume; the molecules are spread out
liquid the state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape; the molecules are loosely spaced
physical change a change in the size or form of matter; can often be reversed; can be caused by temperature, pressure, and motions; ex: ice cream melting, liquid water freezing into ice, clouds forming
chemical change a change that forms a different kind of matter (changes the molecules); usually cannot be reversed; ex: burning wood, metal rusting, digesting food
