FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary Stimulates estrogen secretion and follicle maturation in females; spermatogenesis in males
Zygote A cell formed by the union of two reproductive cells or gametes; the fertilized ovum resulting from the union of a sperm and an ovum.
Ectopic Pregnancy Pregnancy in which the fertilized ovum is implanted outside of its normal place (uterus), locations can include – Abdomen, uterine (fallopian) tube, ovaries.
Reproduction The total process by which organisms produce offspring
Placenta Latin “flat cake”; afterbirth, a specialized vascular disk-shaped organ for maternal-fetal gas and nutrient exchange. Normally, implants in the thick muscular wall of the upper uterine segment
Trophoblast The outer layer of cells of the developing blastocyst that develops the trophoderm or feeding layer

Conception Formation of a viable zygote

Teratogens An agent that can cause defects in a developing embryo or fetus during pregnancy.
Estrogen A sex hormone secreted by the ovaries helps to maintain sexual and reproductive health. Levels of this hormone naturally fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and decline during menopause. One of the key hormones for pregnancy.
Embryo Conceptus from the 3rd week of development until approximately the 8th week after conception.
