| Disability | An Inability to do something, a diminished capacity to perform in a specific way. |
| Handicap | A disadvantage imposed on an individual. |
| Prevalence | The percentage of a population or number of individuals having a particular exceptionality. |
| Traumatic Brain Injury | Damage to the brain caused by n external force, disrupting normal brain function. |
| Intellectual Disabilities | A disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge and skills. |
| Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities | A condition where persistent emotional or behavioral responses significantly impair a student's educational performance, beyond what's expected for their age, culture, or ethnicity. |
| Emotional Disturbance | Conditions causing one or more long-term, severe issues like inability to learn, poor relationships, inappropriate behaviors, depression, or physical symptoms. |
| Deinstitutionalization | Discharge from an institution such as a mental hospital or prison. |
| Inclusion | The action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure. |
| Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) | Requires public schools to a Free Appropriate Public Education for all children with disabilities, mandating evaluations, and educating them alongside non-disabled peers. |
| Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) | A U.S. federal law ensuring that children with disabilities receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) by providing special education from early intervention for infants to school-age programs. |
| Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) | Offers funding to states and set requirements for schools to meet the unique needs of eligible students. |
| Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) | Prohibits disability discrimination, ensuring equal access and opportunities in employment, public services, transportation, and telecommunications, requiring reasonable accommodations like accessible buildings or extra test time. |
| Hydrocephalus | An accumulation of fluid around the brain that can cause mental or physical disabilities if not corrected. |
