Terms and Definition
| Term | Definition |

| Disability | an inability to do something as a result of a specific impairment |
| Handicap | disadvantage imposed on an individual. |
| Prevalence | The percentage of a population or number of people having a particular exeptionality. |
| Traumatic Brain Injury | Injury to the brain resulting in total or partial disability or psychosocial maladjustment that affects educational performance. |
| Special Education | specially designed instructions that meets the unusual needs of a exceptional students and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equipment or facilities. |
| Intellectual disabilities | The newer term "mental retardation" a disability; a disability in intelligence and adaptive environment. |
| Emotional or Behavioral disorders | The terminology proposed by the National Mental Health and Special Education Coalition to replace the federal terminology "emotional disturbance" |
| Emotional disturbance | The term used in federal special education laws and regulation for problematic behavior that interferes with education; the federal term used to indicate the problems of emotional disturbance students. |
| Deinstitutionalization | A social movement starting in the 1960s whereby large numbers of persons with intellectual disabilities and/or mental illness are moved from large mental institutions into smaller community homes or into the homes of their families. |
| Inclusion | Mainstreaming the idea of placing students with disabilities in general classes or other school activities. |
| Education for all Handicap Children Act | Also known as a public law 94-142, which becomes a law in 1975 which is now known as Individuals with disabilities education Act |
| Individuals with Disabilities Education Education Improvement Act | It was enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004; this federal law requires that to receive funds under the act, every school system must provide a free, appropriate public education for every child between ages 3-21. |
| American with Disabilities Act | Civil rights legislation for persons with disabilities ensuring nondiscrimination in a broad range of activities. |
| Hydrocephalus | A condition characterized by enlargement of head because of excessive pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid. |
