Genetics Terms and Definitions Gr. 7

TermDefinition
Alleles The different forms of a gene
Chromosome A doubled rod of condensed chromatin (DNA, RNA and protein)
DNA The genetic material that carries information about an organism; is passed from parent to offspring
Heterozygous Having two different alleles for a trait
Homozygous Having two identical alleles for a train
Homo definition Same
Hetero definition Different
Mutation A change in a gene or chromosome
Punnett Square A chart that shows all the possible combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross.
Genetic cross The mating of two individuals with diff genetic makeups (genotypes) to study how traits are inherited
Trait A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through genes.
Dominant A gene that covers up or dominates the recessive gene
Recessive A gene that is covered up or hidden by the dominant trait
Hybrid An organism that has two different alleles or is heterozygous for a trait
Genotype An organism's genetic makeup or allele combinations
Phenotype An organism's physical appearance or physical traits
