QuestionAnswer
Paralytic ileus A condition where the intestines stop moving normally without a physical blockage, causing buildup of gas and fluids.
Mechanical intestinal obstruction A physical blockage in the intestine (e.g., tumor, hernia, feces) that prevents normal movement of bowel contents.
Borborygmi Loud gurgling or rumbling sounds in the abdomen caused by gas and fluid moving through the intestines.
A serious condition where blood supply to a part of the intestine is cut off, leading to tissue death.
Abdominal girth The measurement of the abdomen used to assess bloating, distention, or fluid accumulation.
Ulcerative colitis A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the colon and rectum, causing ulcers, diarrhea, and bleeding.
Hematochezia The passage of fresh red blood in the stool, usually from the lower gastrointestinal tract.
Fluid electrolyte imbalance A condition where fluids or electrolytes (sodium, potassium, etc.) are too high or too low, affecting body functions.
Toxic megacolon A life-threatening complication of inflammatory bowel disease where the colon becomes severely dilated and inflamed.
Low residue diet A diet that limits fiber and foods that increase stool volume, used to reduce bowel activity.
Crohn’s disease A chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, causing abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Cobblestone (appearance) A bumpy, uneven appearance of the intestinal lining seen in Crohn’s disease due to ulcers and inflammation.
Evaluation The final step of the nursing process where the nurse determines if goals and interventions were effective.
