TermDefinition
The study of exceptional learners is _________ The study of both differences and similarities

Special education Specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student and that requires special materials, teaching techniques, equipment, and/or facilities
Intrllrctual disabilities The newer term for "mental retardation"; a disability in intelligence and adaptive behavior
Emotional or behavioral disorders The terminology proposed by the National Mental Health and Special Education Coalition to replace the federal terminology "emotional disturbance"
Deinstitutionalization movement Advocates crusade for closing of large residential institutions for people with intellectual and mental disabilities; begin in the 1950s and up through the 1970s
Inclusion Mainstreaming; the idea of placing students with disabilities in general education classes and other school activities
Education for All Handicapped Children Act 1975 law: Also known as public law and IDEA
Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 1990 Federal Law that requires all school sysemts to provide a free, appropriate education for every child between the ages 3 and 21, regardless of their disability
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement (IDEIA) Federal Law that guarantees services to individuals with disabilities
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Civial rights legislation for persons with disabilities ensuring nondiscrimination in a broad range of activites
Hydrocephalus An accumulation of fluid around the brian that can cause mental or physcal disabilities if not corrected
