| Protagonist | The main character who is trying to reach a goal. |
| Antagonist | The person or thing trying to stop the protagonist from reaching their goal |
| Figurative language | A different way of expressing yourself. Similes, metaphors, hyperboles, personification, etc.-- all of these poetry terms– are forms of figurative language. |
| Sequencing | Putting things in order. |
| Theme | The underlying message of a text. The message that the author wants to tell you about life. |
| Irony | Something that happens that you don’t expect. |
| Main Idea | A statement that sums up the text. |
| Setting | The time and place of a story. |
| Symbol | An object that stands for itself and something more. |
| Infer | Using context clues to make an educated guess about the text. (Basically, it’s another word meaning ‘to predict.’ |
| Internal Conflict | A conflict within a character, usually when their brain is battling their heart. |
| Ethos | Relating to the credibility of the speaker |
| Pathos | Relating to the appeal of emotion. |
| Logos | Relates to logical reasoning. |
| Kairos | Relates to a sense of timing. |
