nationalism can unify people of a country on it can create intense competition between two or more countries
what did each country compete for? competed for raw material and markets to sell their manufactured goods. Also there were territorial disputes

imperialism As European industrial powers continued to build overseas empires, competition and fierce rivalries deepened for control over colonies in Asia and Africa
militarism Glorifying military power and keeping an army ready for war. The imperial powers of Europe believed that to be truly great they must have a large, powerful military. An arms race ensued
triple alliance (IBGAh) In 1879, Bismarck created an alliance betwee Germany, Austria-Hungary In 1882, Italy joined them to create the Triple Alliance
triple entente (GbRF) In 1890 and for defensive reasons, Russia and France became allies. Germany then began to build up its navy so it could rival that of Great britain. 1907, Great Britian, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente
