TermDefinition
Why do people live in LTC facilities? They need 24-hour skilled care.
What is skilled care? Medically necessary care given by a skilled nurse or therapist; available 24 hours a day
What are the different names for a long-term care facility? Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs), rehabilitation centers, and extended care facilities.
What are some common conditions in LTC facilities? Dementia, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, mobility problems, terminal illness.
Why is a person in a LTC facility called a resident? Because they live in the facility
What is the length of stay? The number of days a person stays in a healthcare facility.
What would a chronic illness or condition be? Long-lasting conditions like cancer, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, heart disease, epilepsy.
What is an acute illness? A sickness that comes on quickly and doesn’t last very long. EX: Flu, strep throat, cold, food poisoning, broken bone.
What is the name of a person who lives in a long-term care facility? Resident
What does the abbreviation Dx stand for? Diagnoses
How does a diagnosis affect a person in a long-term care facility? It affects the type of care a person receives and can influence their independence, emotions, and overall quality of life.
What is home healthcare? Care given to people who are older or chronically ill but are able to and wish to remain at home.
What is assisted living? Care for people who need help with some daily tasks, like showering, meals, and dressing; allows for more independent living.
Do individuals in assisted living need 24-hour care? no
What are adult daycares? Facilities for people who need help and supervision during certain hours but don’t live there.
What is acute care? 24-hour skilled care given in hospitals or ambulatory surgical centers; short-term, immediate care for illness or injuries.
What is sub-acute care? Care given in hospitals or long-term care facilities; less intensive than acute care but more than chronic care.
What is outpatient care? Care for people who had treatments, procedures, or surgeries and need short-term skilled care; no overnight stay.
What is rehabilitation? Care given by specialists and professionals to help a person recover and regain skills.
