American revolution stuff

TermDefinition
French and Indian War War between the British and French who also teamed with the Indians. Britain ultimately won the war and took control of land west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. George Washington began his career in this war.
Proclamation British demand that colonists not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains after the French and Indian War
Sugar Act British attempt to gain tax revenue from the colonists to help pay for the war. Colonists, led by Samuel Adams, resisted this new tax, which was later repealed
Stamp Act Tax on printed materials such as newspapers, pamphlets, licenses, playing cards.
Townshend Act An indirect tax paid on imported goods such as glass, lead, paper, and tea.
What is "taxation without representation"? The Colonists were angry and felt the new taxes were unfair because they had no representation in British Parliament.
Petition A formal written request.
Quartering Act Parliament passed this act/law to force Americans to house, feed & care for British soldiers without their consent.
Sons of Liberty A group of patriots who formed a secret society to oppose British policies at the time of the American Revolution
Boston Massacre The Boston Massacre, known in Great Britain as the Incident on King Street,[1] was a confrontation, on March 5, 1770, during the American Revolution in Boston in what was then the colonial-era Province of Massachusetts Bay.
Boston Tea Party a 1773 protest where American colonists, disguised as Native Americans, dumped British tea into Boston Harbor to oppose "taxation without representation" under the Tea Act
Battle of Lexington & Concord the first military clashes of the American Revolution, where British troops marching to seize colonial arms were met by colonial minutemen, sparking open warfare and the start of the fight for American independence
Intolerable Acts a series of harsh laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 to punish the American colonists, especially Massachusetts, for the Boston Tea Party
First Continental Congress Delegates met to coordinate a response to the Intolerable Acts.
Declaration of Independence Formal declaration of separation from Britain
The Second Continental Congress the de facto governing body for the Thirteen Colonies during the American Revolution
