subordinate someone who is in a lower ranking position in an organisation
advantages of autocratic leader -quick decision making -quick task completion -improved productivity
disadvantages of an autocratic leader -pressure on management causing burn out -lack of staff motivation due to lack of trust -industrial dispute as staff feel undervalued
democratic leadership manager encourages employees to part-take in decision-making but has ultimate authority, delegates tasks as they trusts their employees capabilities and believes staff are self motivated. this style is common in marketing firms and accounting firms
advantages of democratic leadership -increased intrapreneurship -developed skills and knowledge in staff -high level of staff motivation
empowerment occurs when a manager allows employees to make certain decisions on behalf of the firm. the employee does not need to consult a manager
disadvantages of democratic leadership -slow decision making as managers consult employees -frustrated employees if their ideas aren't incorporated -management resentment as they don't want to loose control over subordinates
laissez-faire leader a manager that outlines the business' goals and trusts the employees to decide by themselves what the best way to achieve these goals are. its a hands off approach and is common in pharmaceuticals and r&d

advantages of laissez-faire leadership style -employee motivation is high as they feel trusted -improved skills and knowledge prepares employees for future positions in the firm -intrapreneurship, the different skills/abilities making new firm ideas which reduces cost and improves sales
Delegation involves assigning a task to another person e.g. a subordinate. its important a manager communicates clearly to prevent confusion.
disadvantages of laissez-faire leadership style -unexperienced staff can make mistakes which could cost the firm their reputation or money -reduced productivity due to the lack of management supervision -poor industrial relations as employees aren't meeting targets or may not feel supported
requirements for delegation -clear communication -employee experience and skill -control system which can easily identify and fix mistakes
advantages of delegation -intrapreneurship or profits -employee trust, good industrial relations feel trusted -employees can improve their skills and knowledge with the new experience
disadvantages of delegation -employee stress as they may not want the extra responsibility -poor decision making unexperienced staff can make mistakes which could cost the firm their reputation or money -employee resentment as they feel as if the unimportant tasks are given out.
benefits of leadership -can achieve goals easier as manager monitors progress ensuring the firm is on track -saves management time as it allows them to delegate tasks reducing stress -increased employee motivation as good leaders encourage decision making insinuating trust
