| Atmosphere | the layer of gases surrounding Earth where weather happens and living things breathe. |
| Troposphere | is the weather layer. |
| Hydrosphere | all of Earth’s water (oceans, lakes, rivers, groundwater, ice). |
| Biosphere | all living things and their interactions with Earth’s systems. |
| Geosphere | Earth’s solid parts (land, rocks, soil). |
| Evaporation | liquid water turns into water vapor. |
| Condensation | water vapor cools and becomes liquid (cloud formation). |
| Precipitation | water falling from the atmosphere (rain, snow, sleet, hail). |
| Transpiration | water released from plants into the atmosphere. |
| Water vapor | water in gas form; molecules are spread far apart. |
| Freshwater availability | most freshwater is locked in icecaps/glaciers or underground, so little is easily accessible. |
