Enzyme quiz

This is a Biology quiz.

QuestionAnswer
What is metabolism? The chemical reactions that occur in an organism to create energy for the organism to live and function
Why is metabolism important? Because for an organisms and cells, they need to maintain homeostasis.
How do Enzymes help with metabolism? By speeding up those reactions.
What is an enzyme? A type of protein that speeds up chemical reactions. They're known as catalysts
What type of macromolecule are Enzymes? Protein
What word ending is the clue that something is an enzyme? Ase
Do Enzymes get used up? Explain Each enzyme can only work on a specific molecule or type of molecule
What does the shape of an enzyme tells us? It determines what kind of molecule it will work with.
What happens if the shape of the enzyme changes? It is considered (destroyed) and can no longer cause reactions
What are the products of an enzyme? In this reaction the enzyme took two substrates and bound them together to form one new product.
What are the two different things an enzyme can do to substrate? In this reaction the enzyme turns one substrate into two new products
Explain the Lock-and-Key Model In this model, the enzyme is the lock, and the substrate is the key.
Explain the Induced Fit Model This model accounts for the active site of being flexible
What do Enzymes do to food during digestion? Enzymes break down food
Why is it so important for Enzymes to break apart food molecules? Foods need to be broken so they can be metabolized.
What do carbohydrase do? These enzymes help break down carbohydrates. They break down complex sugars and starches into simple sugars.
Give examples of carbohydrate Enzymes Our saliva contains the enzyme amylase which starts to break down carbohydrates in our mouths before it even enters our stomach! Herbivores have an enzyme called cellulose that helps break down plant fibers in their gut.
What do protease do? These enzymes help break down proteins. Proteins are broken down into smaller peptides or amino acids.
An example of Protease is... The enzyme Pepsin is found in the stomach and begins the breakdown on proteins, while the enzyme Trypsin is found in the small intestines and continues to break down proteins into even smaller parts
Another example of Protease is... Carnivores rely heavily on protease enzymes to break down their diet of meat, and actually have very little or no amylase to break down carbs in their saliva!
How do Enzymes build larger molecules? Enzymes can help bring smaller molecules together to build new larger molecules. They can take two substrates and bind them together to form a new product.
What do building Enzymes help do? This is essential in the building of muscles, in the making of DNA and RNA, and to build proteins.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
