Why might collectivized farms have been more susceptible to poor environmental practice? No one took responsibility for the land because they did not own it
What positives can you infer from the past environmental disasters of Eastern Europe? People can learn from long term conditions of pollution of what not to do.
Compare the cleanup story of Chernobyl to stories of the environmental cleanups in previous chapters. What are some common themes? The people responsible for the cleanup caused the disaster. There has to be some types of government regulation.

In what ways have the peoples of Eastern Europe suffered? Two world wars on their land and they were controlled by the Soviet Union for 50 years
Why would the Eastern European countries not want to be part of a “United States of Europe”? They experienced what it was like to be ruled by a central government that did not share their best interests.
Why might these countries be having such a hard time keeping their youth and why are the youth able to leave? Not enough jobs and poor living conditions; they are part of the EU
How are the Romanians and Moldovans unique compared to their neighbors? They are not Slavic; descendants of the Romans and they speak Latin
How did the former governments change the culture of Eastern Europe? They caused people to mistrust each other.
Why might these countries Ukrainian Protestant church be one of the strongest in Eastern Europe? Because it has been under the most persecution
Why is Eastern Europe considered a shatter belt? The size, shape and number of countries have frequently changed. The borders of some countries shifted back and forth. Each time a nation revolted against its conquerors and set up a new country, it was conquered again and again

What characterizes the water of the Black Sea? What might one deduce about the sea life in it because of that characteristic? The Black Sea is anoxic meaning it lacks oxygen. This is because there is far movement between its upper and lower layers.
