Chapter 9 Key terms

QuestionAnswer
hematoma reddened, swollen area where blood collects under the skin
hemoconcentration An increase in the ratio of formed elements to plasma caused by leaving the tourniquet on too long or too tight. hemoconcentration can alter test results.
hemolysis can occur if the tourniquet is too tight or is left on too long. Destruction of RBC's can alter test results
palpation To feel for the veins with your fingers.
petechiae Small red spots on the skin, caused by a too tight tourniquet
requisition A standardized form with requests for the tests coming from the doctor requesting them.
