Solid Definite volume Definite shape Particles are close together and vibrate
Liquid No definite Shape Definite Volume Particles flow past each other
Gas No definite volume No definite shape Particles are very spread apart and move extremely fast
Matter Anything that takes up space and has mass. Everything in the universe is made up of matter.
Physical properties These can change the look of the substance, but do NOT change the actual substance. (Examples: ripping a piece of paper, crushing a can)
Properties of matter Rough, smooth, hard, soft, round, square, flexible, smelly, etc. Basically, all physical properties of matter are found by using your 5 senses.
Characteristic Properties Physical Properties of matter that never change regardless of the size of the substance
Chemical Properties Combine or break apart to form new substances with new properties (EX: Burning wood, leaves changing color, heating sugar)
Melting The change in state from a solid to a liquid
Freezing The change in state from gas to liquid
Condestation The change in state from a gas to a liquid
Evaporation The change in state from a liquid to a gas
Sublimnation The change in state from a solid directly to a liquid
Thermal Energy Heat
Physical Change A change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance.
Chemical Change A change that occurs when one or more substances are changed into entirely new substances with different properties. Can not change back.
