A-Level Greek

Odyssey 16: Lines 201-225

TermDefinition
τὸν δ᾽ ἀπαμειβόμενος προσέφη πολύμητις Ὀδυσσεύς: ‘Τηλέμαχ᾽, οὔ σε ἔοικε φίλον πατέρ ἔνδον ἐόντα οὔτε τι θαυμάζειν περιώσιον οὔτ᾽ ἀγάασθαι: And Odysseus of the many wiles, replying, addressed him: "Telemachus, it does not befit you, with your beloved father being inside, to either admire or wonder excessively:
οὐ μὲν γάρ τοι ἔτ᾽ ἄλλος ἐλεύσεται ἐνθάδ᾽ Ὀδυσσεύς, ἀλλ᾽ ὅδ᾽ ἐγὼ τοιόσδε, παθὼν κακά, πολλὰ δ᾽ ἀληθείς, ἤλυθον εἰκοστῷ ἔτεϊ ἐς πατρίδα γαῖαν. For in truth no other Odysseus will come here, but as such I am this man, having suffered many evils and having wandered far, I have come to my homeland in the twentieth year.
αὐτάρ τοι τόδε ἔργον Ἀθηναίης ἀγελείης, ἥ τέ με τοῖον ἔθηκεν, ὅπως ἐθέλει, δύναται γὰρ, But in truth this is the work of Athena, driver of spoil, who made me as such, as she wishes, for she can,
At one time like a beggar, but in turn at another time a young man having beautiful clothes around his skin.
And it is easy for the gods, who hold broad heaven, to both glorify and to maltreat mortals.
ὣς ἄρα φωνήσας κατ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἕζετο, Τηλέμαχος δὲ ἀμφιχυθεὶς πατέρ᾽ ἐσθλὸν ὀδύρετο, δάκρυα λείβων, ἀμφοτέροισι δὲ τοῖσιν ὑφ᾽ ἵμερος ὦρτο γόοιο: So then, having spoken, he sat down; but Telemachus embraced his noble father and wept, shedding tears, and in them both a desire for weeping arose:
κλαῖον δὲ λιγέως, ἀδινώτερον ἤ τ᾽ οἰωνοί, φῆναι ἢ αἰγυπιοὶ γαμψώνυχες, οἷσί τε τέκνα ἀγρόται ἐξείλοντο πάρος πετεηνὰ γενέσθαι: And they wept shrilly, even more loudly than birds, ospreys or vultures with crooked talons, from which countryfolk have taken away their young before becoming fledged:
ὣς ἄρα τοί γ᾽ ἐλεεινὸν ὑπ᾽ ὀφρύσι δάκρυον εἶβον. καί νύ κ᾽ ὀδυρομένοισιν ἔδυ φάος ἠελίοιο, εἰ μὴ Τηλέμαχος προσεφώνεεν ὃν πατέρ᾽ αἶψα: For as such they shed pitiable tears from under their eyelids. And now the light of the sun would have set on them weeping, if Telemachus had not suddenly addressed his father:
'ποίῃ γὰρ νῦν δεῦρο, πάτερ φίλε, νηΐ σε ναῦται ἤγαγον εἰς Ἰθάκην; τίνες ἔμμεναι εὐχετόωντο; "For now, beloved father, in what sort of ship did sailors bring you hither to Ithaca? What sort of men did they boast to be?
τὸν δ᾽ αὖτε προσέειπε πολύτλας δῖος Ὀδυσσεύς: For I do not at all think that you arrived here on foot." And much enduring Odysseus again replied:
