Subcontinent Large landmass that is part of a continent, but separated from it by a geographic feature like a mountain range.
Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro Two of the world’s earliest major cities. These cities were carefully planned with main streets, side streets and a wall surrounding each neighborhood.
Himalaya Mountains The highest mountain range in the world. It separates India from the rest of Asia.
Aryans A group of people from central Asia who began settling in the region of the Harappan civilization after its collapse
Civilization Organized government, culture, religion. And a writing system.
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on three sides.
Hinduism The oldest religion in the world.
Dharma The act of living a life of selflessness, respect, and good conduct.
Granary A storage house for grains.
Great Bath Ancient structure that was used as part of a bathing ritual.
Reincarnation The belief that the soul is reborn after death.
Eight Fold Path Buddhist teaching about the way to achieve nirvana.
Buddhism Religion still practiced in Asia founded by Siddartha Gautama.
Vedas Book of Knowledge in the Hindu religion.
Caste System A social and religious hierarchy that a person is born into and cannot change.
Varnas Classes included in the Caste system
Brahmins Included in the Caste system as priests: can perform religious ceremonies
Kshatriyas Included in the Caste system as warriors who ran the government and army
Vaisyas Included in the Caste system as common people: merchants craftsman, landowners, skilled workers
Sudra Included in the Caste system as people with few rights: manual laborers and servants
Dalits: Untouchables This group did not belong to any varna: performed undesirable jobs
Sanskrit A written language developed by the Aryans to record sacred songs, poems and prayers.
Monsoon A strong wind that blows one direction in the winter and the opposite direction in the summer.
