| Term | Definition |

| Commutative property | the order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answers |
| Associative property | the way in which numbers are grouped when added or multiplied does not change the answer |
| Identity property of multiplication | the product of any factor & 1 is the same as the factor |
| Identity property of addition | the sum of an added & 0 is the same as the added |
| Additive inverse property | adding a number and its opposite will produce a sum of 0 Ex: -5 + 5 = 0 |
| Multiplicative inverse property | multiplying any number and its inverse equals 1 Ex: 4 x ¼ = 1 |
| factor | a number they, when multiplied by another, produces a given number (the product) |
| Distributive Property | EX: 4(x + 3) = 4x + 12 16 + 40 = 8(2 + 5) |
| Commutative property | Ex: (x + 7) + 9 = 9 + (7 + x) 5 x 6 = 6 x 5 |
| Associative property | Ex:(x + 7) + 9 = x + (7 + 9) 4(3 x 9) = (4 x 3)9 |
| Identity property of multiplication | Ex: 6(1) = 6 |
